Purchase of an electric scooter: Paris removes the aid of 400 €

The town hall of Paris abandons its bonus of 400 euros offered for the purchase of a motorcycle or an equivalent 50cc electric scooter, wishing instead to promote the electric bicycle.

The aid of 400 euros offered to drivers for the purchase of a scooter or an electric motorcycle has just been removed by the city of Paris. The page dedicated to the financial bonuses of the capital was modified on September 26, 2022, confirming the decision of the administration of Anne Hidalgo. The municipality ” favors support for the purchase of an electrically assisted bicycle”explains a journalist of RTL, quoting the press release issued by the city, which Numerama was able to consult. This change will take effect on October 15, 2022.

Until now, the electric two-wheelers concerned had to be ” of categories L1e and L2e (limited to 45 km/h) and defined in the highway code, whose engine power is greater than or equal to 2 kW.” The amount allocated had the advantage of being cumulative with the State’s ecological bonus.

This abolition is rather consistent with the measures taken by the municipality against motorized two-wheelers in recent years, so that the population turns instead to bicycles. Since the beginning of September 2022, all thermal scooters and motorcycles have had to pay for their parking – but drivers of electric two-wheelers must also register almost every day to be entitled to park for free.

This is a loss for future owners of electric scooters, but they can always turn to state aid, certainly a little less advantageous for 50cc equivalent two-wheelers, but still very present. The Ile-de-France region also continues to provide aid.

Aid for bicycles is geared towards the less fortunate

Now financial aid is geared towards bicycles, although they will also be as “ means-tested (…) to help the less fortunate “, explained on Twitter David Belliard, assistant for the transformation of public space and mobility.

It must be said that according to the town hall found that those who had gone through the process of buying an electrically assisted bicycle in Paris and had benefited from the help of the town hall had ” a median income of €4200 net per month (while the median income of Parisians is €2200 net/month) “. Translation: a good part of those who received the aid could have bought an electric bike without this aid.

On the other hand, the town hall creates:

  • Aid for the purchase of a mechanical bicycle: €100 max, subject to means testing
  • Aid for the purchase of a bicycle trailer: €100 max, subject to means testing
  • Aid for the purchase of a bicycle suitable for people with disabilities: €900 max
  • Aid to finance learning to ride a bike or getting back in the saddle: €60 max
  • Assistance with financing an annual bicycle parking subscription: €100 max
  • Assistance in financing a Mobilib subscription: €100 max
  • Assistance with the purchase of accessories (helmets and anti-theft): 50 € max
