Qantas and Airbus will invest up to $200m in sustainable fuels in Australia

DOHA, June 19 (Reuters) – Qantas Airways and Airbus on Sunday announced plans to invest up to $200 million (about 190 million euros) to accelerate the development of a sustainable “SAF” fuels industry in Australia and thus help the Australian company to achieve its carbon emission reduction targets.

The deal, announced on the sidelines of air transport association Iata’s annual meeting in Doha, is in line with Qantas’ target to use 10% SAF in its fuel mix by 2030 and comes after a multi-billion dollar order last month for Airbus aircraft.

The global aviation sector, which is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, has set itself the ambitious goal of increasing its annual consumption of sustainable fuels from around 100 million liters in 2021 to 449 billion in three decades. (Gilles Guillaume for the French version)
