Concern for Spain’s former Queen Sofia: King Felipe’s mother was unexpectedly taken to hospital. Photos now show the Spanish monarch on the way to Sofia.

Disturbing news reaches the public from the Spanish royal family: Former Queen Sofia, 85, is in a hospital in Madrid with an infection.

Queen Sofia unexpectedly admitted to hospital

As the “Vanitatis” portal learned in a message from the court, the mother of King Felipe, 56, admitted to the Ruber Clinic in Spain’s capital on Tuesday evening, April 9, 2024. The former monarch was still “under observation” there on Wednesday, April 10th. The reason for the hospital stay was a urinary tract infection. “We inform you that Her Majesty Queen Sofia was transferred to the Ruber Clinic yesterday evening due to a urinary tract infection. The development is very rapid and favorable,” the statement said. Accordingly, the former regent’s health is likely to be stable.

While it was not known in the first few hours after the shocking news whether Sofia had received a visit from one of her family members, there is now certainty: some photos show King Felipe in the car. The monarch waves and smiles optimistically before entering the hospital with a slightly more serious expression. Apparently Felipe visited his mother alone, and there was no sign of Queen Letizia, 51.

Queen Sofia’s hospitalization is a surprise

Even if the reason is apparently not a serious illness, Queen Sofia’s hospitalization still comes as a surprise. Nothing indicated a health problem during her appearances in the past few days. On Saturday, April 6, Sofia was a guest at the wedding reception of Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida and Teresa Urquijo near Madrid. On Monday, April 8, the Old Queen attended the funeral service for her late nephew Fernando Gómez-Acebo. And on Tuesday, April 9th, she attended a family dinner.

Queen Sofia’s health is considered stable. Usually it is her husband King Juan Carlos, 86, who makes headlines. At the memorial service for the late former King Constantine of Greece, †82, which took place in Windsor in February, he came with a cane and leaned on his son Felipe.
