Bayern, BVB and Union start with crackers in the Champions League

Borussia Dortmund gets what is probably the toughest Champions League group – and has to face the World Cup top scorer right away. The most spectacular start to the group phase awaits Union Berlin. While FC Bayern also plays the toughest opponent, RB has to solve a mandatory task.

FC Bayern Munich starts in the Champions League with a bang against Manchester United. Debutant Union Berlin meanwhile has to start with record winners Real Madrid. This was the result of the group games being scheduled by the European Football Union UEFA. Both games are scheduled for September 20th. “In the Champions League, every opponent is a challenge that we accept with great enthusiasm and dedication,” commented Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel on the draw. In a group with the two outsiders FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray Istanbul, Manchester United is probably the toughest, but definitely the most spectacular opponent.

A day earlier, Borussia Dortmund is already playing a difficult away game at French champions Paris Saint-Germain for World Cup top scorer Kylian Mbappé. BVB caught the hammer group with Paris, Newcastle United and AC Milan in the draw on Thursday. “What a group – let’s go,” wrote BVB defense chief Mats Hummels on X, formerly Twitter. The away game at Young Boys Bern awaits RB Leipzig on September 19th. On the second day of the game on October 4th, the Saxons will meet defending champions Manchester City.

SC Freiburg will start the Europa League on September 21 with an away game at Olympiacos Piraeus before they meet Conference League winners West Ham United on the second day of the game. Bayer Leverkusen will initially meet Swedish club BK Häcken at home. In the Conference League, Eintracht Frankfurt will start on September 21 with Scottish club FC Aberdeen.
