Real Blue NC and TWS in the test: The double devil

The Berlin company Teufel is expanding its range of headphones with two new models: Real Blue NC and Real Blue TWS. Although the names are the same except for a few letters, the two models are worlds apart. The NC are over-ear headphones, while the TWS are in-ears. COMPUTER BILD tested both.

Peace of mind on all fronts thanks to ANC

The suffix NC of the over-ear model stands for “Noise-Cancelling” and thus the noise suppression that is supposed to ensure quiet. In addition, microphones in the headphones record the noise in the environment. The technology then generates opposing sound waves that overlay the noise and make it significantly quieter. The in-ear sisters Real Blue TWS also have such a noise brake, where TWS stands for “True Wireless” – the pair of headphones is “really wireless” with two in-ear plugs.
Teufel Real Blue NC

The Teufel Real Blue NC completely encloses most ears. The wearing comfort is pleasantly high.

With the in-ears, the noise suppression worked better in the test than with the big brother. The plugs insulate better simply because of the way they are constructed and carried, and the electronics also eliminated ambient noise more clearly. In addition, they have a transparency mode for passing through ambient noise, which makes sense in traffic, for example. The over-ear, on the other hand, primarily filtered low tones such as the constant hum on the train. However, voices came through without much resistance. Nice: In the test, there were no annoying background noises when there was silence between individual pieces of music.

  • Clear and detailed sound
  • Good battery life (37.5 hours)

There is only an app for the big ones

Visually, the two models are of course as different as day and night. The Real Blue NC is large, sits comfortably on the head with its padded headband and covers the ears completely without being too tight. There are two buttons on the two ear cups for power and Bluetooth as well as ANC. Also on board: a kind of joystick. Users can use it to control music playback or volume, for example. The Real Blue TWS are also kept simple, but they are quite large for in-ears. Thanks to its low weight of just 8 grams, that doesn’t bother you. The in-ears hold in the ear with the usual rubber attachments. Teufel includes four sizes for different ear types. The TWS don’t have any buttons, instead the control runs over two touch surfaces on the outside. Using appropriate touches and typing commands, users can, for example, jump to the next track, change the volume or answer calls.

Teufel Real Blue NC and TWS

The Teufel Real Blue NC can be controlled using buttons and a joystick, the in-ears Real Blue TWS using touch surfaces under the company logo.

The noise suppression can be switched on and off on the in-ears with a long tap of the finger, the over-ear has its own button for this. With both models, however, there are only beeps as feedback when changes are made, no voice announcements as with competing models. Especially at the beginning, it often remains a mystery which mode is currently active. This is particularly annoying with the in-ears, since there is no app for them that provides information about such settings or enables a mode change. The over-ear offers adjustment options such as equalizer or noise canceling via the “Teufel Headphones” app.

Enduring batteries

Both Real Blue headphones convince with long battery life, which of course differ due to the design. The Real Blue NC lasted an impressive 37.5 hours in the test with active noise suppression. It can be charged via USB-C connection. The over-ear can be connected to devices with a jack output using the included jack cable. So there is music, podcasts or audio books even if the battery runs out of juice. The Real Blue TWS last almost eight hours on a single charge – a really good value for in-ear headphones. A short pit stop of ten minutes in the compact charging and transport box provides power for more than 1.5 hours. The box itself also charges via USB-C, wireless charging via induction is not possible.

Teufel Real Blue TWS

The Teufel Real Blue TWS are stuck in the ear canal with rubber knobs. The weight is low at 8 grams.

Clear sound, rich bass

Of course, design and equipment are only half the battle, the focus is on the sound. And here both Teufel headphones were able to convince in the test. The Real Blue NC easily comes out on top thanks to its clear and detailed sound. It reproduces voices and highs unadulterated. The bass is concise and goes deep enough, but it lacks a bit of pressure. The Real Blue TWS rely on stronger basses, but they are a bit too dominant in the upper range. When it comes to highs, the in-ears are more reserved. As a result, the overall sound is warm and pleasant, while voices are clear and understandable.

  • Warm and balanced sound
  • Solid battery life (7 h, 47 min)

Teufel Real Blue NC and TWS in the test: conclusion

With its two new Real Blue models, Teufel offers good technology at fair prices. However, the controls require getting used to, and an app for the in-ears would also be desirable. Both the over-ear Real Blue NC and the in-ear Real Blue TWS have their strengths in very similar areas: both headphones have a pleasant sound and decent bass. In addition, they offer high wearing comfort and very long battery life.
