There's a recall for bread. Several varieties are said to be contaminated with a toxic chemical. The ethylene oxide contained is considered carcinogenic.

Germans love their bread. Accordingly, many people should have stocked up with enough supplies before the holidays. Now, however, you should be careful: If you have crispbread in your home, you should check your inventory. Because a recall was issued for the "Wasa" brand.

Two types of the crispbread manufacturer are said to be contaminated with ethylene oxide and therefore no longer consumed. The substance is a gas that is used, among other things, to disinfect food – and which is highly toxic.

The following types of bread are specifically affected by the recall, as warns the productwarnung.eu portal, among others:

Other batches should expressly not be affected. The recall goes back to a warning about sesame seeds that was used in the products. This in turn is contaminated with ethylene oxide and has already led to a number of product recalls in recent weeks, including snacks and spreads.

In a statement, the Bundestag assesses ethylene oxide as toxic and carcinogenic. It is said to cause irritation of the respiratory tract, skin and eyes and also to react with the genetic material, so it is genotoxic.

Anyone who has already bought the crispbread can bring it back to the relevant branch and the purchase price will be refunded.
