Your children are starting to ask for pocket money, but you don’t know how much to give them? This study revealing how much money is given to children in France according to their age and their region of residence can help you make your decision.

For pocket money children, there is not a single right or wrong answer, several solutions are available to you: do not give any, give some in exchange for services, according to school results or even without asking anything in return, to you choose. If, according to a study pixpay, 14% of parents choose to give pocket money in exchange for daily chores, many prefer to give it regularly. On average, children begin to receive money (a few coins) at first grade, every week for younger children and then every month for older children.

Good news (for the kids), the latest Pixpay barometer reveals that they receive more spending money on average than last year: 33 euros against 31 last yearan increase of 6.45%. Why ? Maybe because the parents take inflation into account, they are more generous, or the children are excellent negotiators. So how much pocket money do children earn in 2022? What are the departments in which parents are the most generous?

How much pocket money according to age?

The amount of pocket money given is different according to gender but especially according to the age of the child and the amount received by young French people increases rapidly as they grow up:

  • Between 10 and 14 years old children receive an average of 26 euros per month
  • The 14-16 years old they have 31 euros,
  • For the 16-18 years old on average 41 euros
  • The 18 and over receive an average of 45 euros per month


College and high school students being more independent, it is possible to entrust them with a larger sum of money, but in the event of uncontrolled excesses, the abolition of pocket money is a means of pressure regularly used by parents. Be autonomous does not necessarily mean being responsible.

In which region do children receive the most pocket money?

With regard to the disparities according to the regions, the young Corsicans are the best off with on average 50 euros pocket money per month. Children from the PACA region and Ile-de-France are also in the high average with respectively 37 and 35 euros per month.

Who is more generous, mom or dad?

Still according to this study, dads are the most generous with pocket money, they pay an average of 8 euros more than moms! However, the mental load of pocket money comes mainly to moms since they are the ones who manage their children’s pocket money in 69% of families.
