Regrowing: Simply let vegetables grow back

What does regrowing actually mean?

After cooking, food residues from fruits and vegetables usually end up in the garbage. We can obtain fertilizer with house composting (e.g. a worm box), but some vegetables and fruits are also suitable for the propagation of cuttings, also called regrowth or regrowing. The English term stands for Let it grow back. Not only can vegetable residues be used sensibly, you will soon have fresh vegetables in the house ?. You don't need your own house with a garden in the countryside – a window sill also does.

This is how regrowing works

The principle is the same for many varieties: you put the stalk, the kernel or just a piece of it in water, let it germinate there for some time and later plant it in soil. Regrowing isn't suitable for all vegetables, however spring onions are very easy to care for in the relationship. Here we show it step by step:

  1. Place the spring onions (about 3 cm) in a small glass with water.
  2. Make sure the roots are covered, but not the cut area. Leave in it for about a week.
  3. If they start to sprout, you can take them out and plant them in a pot with growing soil (do not cover completely).
  4. Water regularly.

The further care for your little plant

It is important that you do this in the initial phase (steps 1 and 2) Water changes daily and that the plant warm and bright stands. The windowsill is usually suitable for this.

Tip: Certainly also interesting for children to look after the plant from the beginning and to see it grow.

Special feature potatoes

There is a little specialty about potatoes. You can also let them grow back, you leave out the water glass and put them straight into the earth:

  1. Find a potato that is already germinating, ie has "eyes".
  2. Cut them in half and place them face down on a board.
  3. Let them dry overnight.
  4. Plant them directly in the ground, with the "eyes" up.
