Rémi without family: where was the film shot?

This Friday, August 26, TMC rebroadcasts Rémi sans famille. For this feature film released in 2018, director Antoine Blossier chose the wild landscapes of a French region.

It is a mythical work of French literature. In 2018, director Antoine Blossier decided to adapt the novel Rémi sans famille by Hector Malot into a film. For this feature film, the filmmaker has drawn up a five-star cast: Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Ledoyen, Ludivine Sagnier and Jacques Perrin. For his Rémi, Antoine Blossier chose Maleaume Paquin after a huge casting in which more than 400 children took part. “He was the fifteenth child I met during the casting and I immediately fell in love with him. I expected a long, difficult search, and I was disturbed by the to have found so quickly, he confided. I saw about four hundred other children before deciding: I wanted to be absolutely sure of my choice.. Would he be able to hold on physically during the thirteen weeks that the filming would last?

“I made him come back several times giving him different and increasingly difficult scenes to play. He was great and I understood that he was solid”, added Antoine Blossier. Once his Rémi was found, the filming could begin. And for Rémi sans famille, the production chose the landscapes of Occitania. “Aubrac is a region that is not very well known in French cinema, no doubt for logistical reasons”, assured the filmmaker before the release of this feature film. He immediately fell under the spell of “this wild region, which makes it all its charm”. “I liked this gigantic and so cinematic western setting: we were in France and at the same time elsewhere”, confided Antoine Blossier. However, the filming of Rémi sans famille was not easy. “We had to bring cranes to places that were very difficult to access, it was complicated, but I wanted to”remembered the director.

Rémi without family: what is the story?

“As I was keen on the postcard side of the villages in which we filmed – Cordes-sur-Ciel, Castelnau-de-Montmirail… – magnificent places that are part of our heritage. Disney, which sent its graphic designers throughout Europe to immerse himself in architecture in the tales he adapted, knew what he was doing. It is, in a way, a return to the sources”added the director. As a reminder, this film tells the story of Rémi, who is torn from his adoptive mother and entrusted to Signor Vitalis, a mysterious traveling musician, at the age of 10.. At his side, he will learn the particularly harsh life, but also made of joys, mountebank and singing to earn his daily bread. Fortunately, he is accompanied by the faithful dog Capi and the little monkey Joli-Coeur throughout his incredible journey through France.
