Removing Turmeric Stains: The Best Home Remedies

Turmeric is extremely healthy and has many uses in the kitchen. Once on clothing, however, turmeric leaves unsightly stains. Find out how you can remove turmeric stains here!

The turmeric root and the turmeric powder are characterized by an intense yellow color that leaves yellowish spots when processed. This is due to the color curcumin it contains. This is particularly annoying on a piece of clothing. But don't panic: you can easily remove the stains from clothing with these simple home remedies.

First aid for turmeric stains

Turmeric stains are particularly stubborn when the curcumin penetrates deep into the fibers. Therefore try to shake off or tap off the turmeric powder first: This works best from the inside of the fabric. Avoid rubbing the curcumin further into the fibers!

Remove turmeric stains with baking soda

That's how it's done:

  1. Mix together baking soda and some water to form a thick paste.
  2. Gently spread the paste over the stain using a cloth. Let the paste sit for a while
  3. Then put the clothes in the wash.

Remove turmeric stains with vinegar

You need:

  • two tablespoons of vinegar
  • 0.5 cups rubbing alcohol (colorless)

That's how it's done:

  1. Mix the vinegar with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Soak a cloth in the liquid and dab it on the stain.
  3. Repeat this several times until the stain is removed.
  4. Then let the area dry.

Note: If you don't have any rubbing alcohol in stock, you can alternatively mix two cups of warm water with washing-up liquid and use it instead of the rubbing alcohol.

Carbon dioxide for turmeric stains

You need:

  • Carbonated water (alternative: soda water)

That's how it's done:

  1. Soak a rag in carbonated water, then dab it on the turmeric stain.
  2. After five minutes of exposure, you can dab the stain with a dry cloth. The stain should now be gone.

Remove turmeric stains with bleach

Danger: This variant may only be used with white clothing!

That's how it's done:

  1. Dissolve some bleach in a container of hot water.
  2. Soak your white garment in the liquid and let it soak.
  3. Then wash the clothes in the washing machine as normal.

Note: This method is not suitable for silk, wool, or mohair.

Remove turmeric stains with sunlight

Sunlight makes the spots disappear. Curcumin is not lightfast, which is why UV light can be used. This requires bright daylight and a little patience. However, you should be careful with colored clothing, as it can fade if the sunlight is too intense. Avoid direct sun if necessary.
