Respect: Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson becomes "Queen of Soul"

A new trailer shows Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin. Are you waving for "Respect" the next gold boy?

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson (38, "Dreamgirls") shows herself in her new, big role: she embodies the late soul icon Aretha Franklin (1942-2018). The film "Respect" will show the eventful life of the "Queen of Soul", from the humble beginnings in her father's church choir to her ascent to the music legend. Now a new trailer gives a taste of how Hudson portrays the singer, who died in 2018 at the age of 76 after suffering from cancer.

Will Jennifer Hudson win another Oscar for this role after "Dreamgirls"? Some observers believe that this is possible. Aretha Franklin is said to have personally selected the singer and actress during her lifetime to portray her in the biopic. Directed by "Respect" stage director Liesl Tommy. Other roles include Forest Whitaker, Tate Donovan, Marlon Wayans, Tituss Burgess and Mary J. Blige.

An Oscar appearance?

The trailer shows various voices on stage by Hudson alias Franklin, as well as a press conference at which the singer, who is committed to civil rights, explains: "We have to disturb peace if we are not granted peace."
