Return after a horror fall: ski jumper Tande has a special goal

Return after horror fall
Ski jumper Tande has a special goal

Nine months ago nobody could say for sure whether Daniel-André Tande would ever be able to ski jumping again. After his horror fall, he was in a coma for several days. In the meantime he is back on the hill and wants to go back to the scene of the accident.

The ski jumper Daniel-André Tande, who fell badly around nine months ago, is aiming for a return to the accident site of Planica. “In addition to the tour and the Olympics, there is a very special goal: I want to be part of the ski flying in Planica in March. I want to defeat the hill,” said Tande in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”.

After a horror fall on the giant facility in Planica, Slovenia, the 27-year-old was in a coma for several days this March. He suffered a broken collarbone and a punctured lung, and the doctors found four cerebral haemorrhages.

“I can’t judge how my body will react when I return to this place. When I’m up at the hill and freeze, I just turn around again and take the lift down,” said Tande.

Tande on the podium again

Things are going solidly for the Norwegian this winter. At the Four Hills Tournament he is part of the team of head coach Alexander Stöckl. In Klingenthal, Saxony, he was back on the podium two weeks ago. “From the moment I woke up from the coma, I always believed in it,” he said after his return to the ski jumping elite of the newspaper VG.

His coach Stöckl was also delighted with the comeback. “Half a year ago he wasn’t talking about ski jumping,” said the Austrian at VG: “It was only about Daniel getting well again. But when he started jumping, we saw his love for this sport. This one second place is very well deserved. “
