Until last summer, we had no idea where the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond his Stage 4which despite its introduction of Multiverse offered no bright red wires. With the announcement of two films avengers coming to close the Phase 6 and the Multiverse Sagathe course is now clear, but the path is still very long and full of questions. To launch the year 2023 and begin the Stage 5 of mcu, marvel studios had the curious idea of entrusting this task to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumaniathird part of a series of appreciable feature films and all directed by Peyton Reed, but which never had the pretension to compete with the biggest projects of this shared universe. Nevertheless, to attract the spectator in the room, a size argument has been added to the equation this time: Kang the Conqueror. Is it enough and what does it bring? Let’s take the time to discuss it.
The star of the film is Kang!
If you’ve been following the trailers, you probably already know that Scott, Hope, Cassie, Janet And Hanky Pym will find themselves transported against their will into the Quantum Realm after an “accident”. The little family will obviously be separated once they arrive in this Microverse which had only been introduced on the surface in the past, the opportunity to discover several facets. And there, difficult not to make a comparison with Star Wars everything is ready for it. Even if some humanoid beings similar to Earthlings populate this world, we find a variety of creatures, each more original and strange than the other, which delight the science fiction fan that we are. The scriptwriters have also intelligently taken into account the language barrier within the story, with a well-found and credible solution against a backdrop of humor (and holes…). This strangest melting-pot has been an opportunity for artists to come up with a whole bunch of even crazier concepts than those implemented during the cosmic adventures of recent films. Thor And Guardians of the Galaxy.
This is also felt in the end credits, seeing the many people in charge of VFXalmost everything having required the CGI in this world outside of time and space. Without being fussy about this kind of detail, we have almost nothing to say about the use of green screens or other digital imaging technologies, with some shots on the truly contemplative and exotic sets, teeming with details, a beautiful invitation to travel in the imagination. Well, reality ends up catching up with us when we see what constitutes THE joke of the movie, yes, of course we are talking about MODOK. Corey Stoll has resumed his role as Darren Crosswho served as the villain in the first Ant Man under the name of Yellowjacket. The production has also thought of everything by placing a very clear flashback as a summary, which appears a bit forced, but has the merit of recontextualizing the character. It must be said thatwith his big head and his armor, he is almost unrecognizable and above all very laughable, his special effects not being at the level. That was the risk in carrying such a villain in live actioneven more without making it ugly like the comics, giving her an aura of a big baby. The addition of a full-face helmet just bringing this threatening touch is well found, but too little used. His role is ultimately quite anecdotal in the sense that anyone could have taken his place without it changing the plot, especially since his narrative arc ends in general indifference and that he is far from his “genius” of yesteryear. What a day, as the other would say.
Anyway, the star of the film is kang ! Jonathan Majors perfectly embodies this version of the character by infusing him with a human side during certain scenes, while managing to show his dangerousness, his power and his rage a few moments later. Stuck in the Quantum Realmhe will call on Ant Man to carry out a rather particular “heist” in order to recover an artefact that he needs. Although the most fastidious will no doubt pester the resolution of the intrigue a little too easy, the latter holds up perfectly and offers a beautiful spectacle against the backdrop of a classic struggle between an evil empire and a local resistance. Yes, compare this kang To dark Vador is obvious given the context, without being particularly relevant. The potential of this enemy who promises to be recurring now has been well introduced and we can only be excited about his future appearances.which will however have to show us more frontally that it has nothing to envy to Thanos. After all, it would have been strange ifAnt Man forces him to give his all.
Present on the promotional posters, the character of Krylar by Bill Murray has a fairly limited screen time, serving above all to slip in details about the past of Janet. Michelle Pfeiffer is also one of the good surprises of the feature filmsomewhat eclipsing Evangeline Lilly as a connoisseur of the Quantum Realm where she spent so many years, acting as a narrative lever. The action scenes with the Wasp aren’t they very numerous, even if it usually arrives right when it is necessary. Michael Douglas is a little behind him, occupying more of a supporting role which does not suit him so badly. The script string attached to it can be seen from afar, but with a slight twist that makes the whole thing very fun. As for Ant Man / Scott Langit is therefore from the angle of the father worried about his daughter and the mentor that he is approachedeager to make up for lost time following theEclipse, in addition to being entitled without surprise to the major action scenes. We did not notice any lack of rhythm and would have even appreciated a few rabs in particular to see more of this strange microscopic universe.
Finally, we came out of our session being quite satisfied with what we had watched, but nothing more, with above all the desire to see again kang. It must be said that the two post-credits scenes had something to tickle us (so stay until the end), we will come back to this in an article with spoilers to talk about it fully. It is certainly not free from faults and its soundtrack is forgettable (no song comes to mind, that is to say), but Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania remains a good family entertainment in line with the previous two and it was probably not necessary to expect much more.
Note : 3 out of 5 stars
