Whether in a salad or as an ingredient for delicious cookies: Roasted hazelnuts are a real treat! Here's how to roast hazelnuts.

Hazelnuts – a healthy snack for in between

The hazelnut scores not only with its unique taste, but also with its healthy ingredients: Iron, calcium, zinc, unsaturated fatty acids and B vitamins make the nuts the perfect energy snack! When heated, the good ingredients are not lost, they are only slightly changed.

You can get whole hazelnuts in the organic shop or freshly harvested from a hazelnut bush: From September to December the delicious nuts are ripe. The hazelnut bush can often be found in rows of hedges or on the edges of fields or forests.

Roasting hazelnuts: in the pan

  1. Crack the hazelnuts with a nutcracker.
  2. Put as many hazelnuts in a pan that they don't lie on top of each other.
  3. Warning: Use to roast the nuts no fat!
  4. Heat the pan on medium heat and roast the nuts seven to ten minutes. Don't forget to turn them regularly, as the hazelnuts burn easily!
  5. Remove the nuts from the pan once they're done roasting. Now all they have to do is cool down!

Roasting hazelnuts: In the oven

  1. Use a nutcracker to remove the shell from the nuts.
  2. Spread the hazelnuts out on a parchment-lined baking sheet so that they don't lie on top of each other.
  3. Put the tray in the preheated oven 180 degrees (Two-sided heat). Leave the nuts on the middle rack for eight to twelve minutes roast. If you don't want to preheat the oven, you can slide the tray in directly and just leave the nuts in there a little longer.
  4. As soon as the hazelnuts turn brown and give off a nutty scent, they are ready. Now they can be taken out of the oven.
  5. Remove the hazelnuts from the baking sheet and let them cool.

Skin the roasted hazelnuts

Immediately after roasting the nuts, place them on a clean tea towel and wrap them around them. This traps the steam, which in turn helps loosen the shell. Now you can rub the hazelnuts against each other in the cloth, which will cause them to peel themselves. If the skin does not come off so well, return the hazelnuts to the pan or oven and let them roast a little longer.

Store roasted hazelnuts

The roasted hazelnuts can be well cooled in one closed container stored for several months. Choose one for that dark and cool place, such as the pantry.
