Room 212: what aborted project is behind this film?

Released in cinemas in 2019, the movie called Room 212worn by Chiara Mastroianni, Vincent LacosteCamille Cottin, Benjamin Biolay and Carole Bouquet, will be broadcast for the first time unencrypted on French television on Sunday August 14, 2022, from 10:50 p.m. on France 2. Directed by Christophe Honoréthis feature film features the character of Maria, a professor of legal history at a university, embodied on screen by Chiara Mastroianni. The latter has an affair with one of her students, Asdrubal. Her husband Richard, interpreted by Benjamin Biolaydiscovers it by chance, overhearing messages on Maria’s cell phone.

They argue, and Maria decides to leave their apartment to move into the hotel across the street, inside room 212, from which she can discreetly observe her husband on the other side of the street. She gives herself the night to think. Several characters from his past and that of Richard will visit him. This is the 6th time that Christophe Honoré has directed Chiara Mastroianni. The director says he wanted to film again “the worried brow and the dimples of irony“ of the actress. He also wanted to film a thinking character. “The more Maria would like to reflect on her life, the more her life turns out to be occupied by protagonists who are determined to speak in her place. […] Here she is confronted not with loneliness, but with the noisy group of those who claim to have suffered from her, from her freedom, from her desires.“, he explained.

Room 212: Christophe Honoré was originally supposed to make another film

For the record, Room 212 was born after Christophe Honoré had abandoned a project called Flowerswhose story took place during the Occupation, then in the 1950s. We came across an imaginary painter, a piano, Picardy and the Opéra Garnier. The director chose to drop this film, lest he“entails in too solemn a form“.”In short, I did not want this too respectable film of which I was beginning to dream“, he added.
