Rope rescue – ski tourers hit by a piece of rock: injured

A 31-year-old ski tourer from Spittal an der Drau was hit by a piece of rock on Saturday afternoon on the Weinasch (Karawanken). The rescue helicopter RK1 had to carry out a rope rescue.

The 31-year-old Spittal climbed with a comrade (27) from Graz at around 12.30 p.m. via the Weinaschkar, municipality of Feistritz im Rosental, using crampons to the summit of the Weinasch. The men had their touring skis strapped to their backs and wore helmets. About 100 meters before the summit, the 27-year-old lead climber encountered a piece of rock. He was able to dodge and warned his friend who was climbing behind him. However, the 31-year-old could not dodge completely and was hit on the left leg by the 20 by 30 centimeter piece of rock and injured. Since the ski tourer could not climb any further, climbers present at the summit made the emergency call. The rescue helicopter RK1 then carried out a rope rescue at 1800 meters above sea level and brought the injured to the LKH Villach. The younger ski tourer was able to dismount himself. He emphasized that no other climbers were ahead of them.
