Fortuna finally lets the Baumgart effect at HSV fizzle out

Everything is supposed to get better at HSV with the new coach Steffen Baumgart, but the Hanseatic League goes astray again at the end of a season: Fortuna Düsseldorf wins the top duel and crawls its way to the top of the table. Hansa Rostock achieved an important success in the table cellar.

Fortuna Düsseldorf – Hamburger SV 2:0 (1:0)

Steffen Baumgart is also not yet on the path to promotion for Hamburger SV in the 2nd Bundesliga. The new coach saw a 0-2 (0-1) defeat at Fortuna Düsseldorf in his first away game. After the second defeat in the third game as HSV coach, there is a risk of slipping to fourth place on Saturday. With only their second win in the eighth game of the year, Düsseldorf is back in the race for a return to the upper house and is now only one point behind third place in the table.

Felix Klaus (11th) and Christos Tzolis (63rd) scored the goals for the team of Daniel Thioune, one of Baumgart’s predecessors, who failed in the task in Hamburg. Substitute Moritz Heyer saw a yellow-red card (51st). A major passing error in midfield by Jonas Meffert led to the second goal: Dennis Jastrzembski sent on Tzolis, who scored his 14th goal of the season.

HSV immediately played in an exemplary manner: Tzolis asserted himself on the left side of the attack and Klaus used his cross to give Düsseldorf an early lead. Hamburg then tried to control the game, but Fortuna defended in a concentrated and compact manner, although they rarely took the pressure off.

The best chance to equalize went to Robert Glatzel, who narrowly missed the target with a long-range shot (30′). The hosts also benefited from the miserable pitch conditions in their defensive work. Shortly after the break, HSV found itself outnumbered: Heyer was sent off after the second yellow-worthy foul after being substituted in the 14th minute.

Eintracht Braunschweig – Hansa Rostock 0:1 (0:0)

Hansa Rostock achieved a very important victory in the relegation battle. Coach Mersad Selimbegovic’s team defeated their direct rivals Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0 (0-0) and thus left direct relegation place 17 for the time being. Kevin Schumacher (72nd) scored the celebrated winning goal.

With their first win in five games and now 25 points, the Cog moved up to 16th place in the relegation zone. Braunschweig, without a sense of success for four games, fell back to second-to-last place with 24 points after 25 match days.

Both teams initially acted timidly. But then the Rostock team took control of the basement duel. Svante Ingelsson hit the crossbar with the best chance of the first half for the guests, who now dominated the game (29th). After the break, Schumacher rewarded the pressing team from the Baltic Sea. Almost in return, Anderson Lucoqui missed the quick equalizer.
