Royals: Europe’s heirs to the throne live such different lives

Queen Margrethe is the last queen in Europe to abdicate – but the female offspring is already in the starting blocks. Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Princess Leonor, Princess Amalia and Princess Elisabeth have grown up in recent years and are preparing for their role as queen of their country. Sometimes more, sometimes less traditional.

You are following in big footsteps. Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, 19, Princess Leonor of Spain, 18, Princess Amalia of the Netherlands, 19, and Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, 22, are the future of Europe’s monarchy. The princesses have grown up in recent years and are slowly starting to go their own way. And each in their own way.

Four women with four different lives who still have the same future. GALA takes a look at their present.

Europe’s heirs to the throne live completely different lives

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway – the adventurous one

Princess Ingrid Alexandra will ascend to the Norwegian throne after her father Prince Haakon, 50, but until that happens, the royal can still enjoy her freedom. Ingrid Alexandra celebrated her graduation from school in the summer of 2023, but she didn’t allow herself a break afterwards. The princess has been working on it since the fall Uranienborg School as a school assistant and is now said to have even moved close to her new place of work. The heir to the throne is said to have settled in the Grünerløkka district, one of the hippest neighborhoods in Oslo, known for street art, chic bars, hip dance clubs, second-hand shops, weekend markets and cozy cafés.

A move that did not surprise Ulf André Andersen, editor-in-chief of “Se og Hør”. In his eyes, Princess Ingrid Alexandra is a “tough, fearless and adventurous girl.” Nevertheless, the decision to have your first apartment in the middle of Grünerløkka – and not in the west of the city – is a particularly big one, after all, the Royal’s security has to be ensured around the clock. Magnus Heien Haugstad could also take care of the Norwegian princess. The student and the royal have been rumored to be in a relationship since Ingrid Alexandra’s 18th birthday, The court has not yet wanted to officially comment on the headlines.

Princess Amalia of the Netherlands – the battered one

Princess Amalia does not (yet) have the privilege of her own apartment. After the heir to the throne had to move out of her student shared apartment in Amsterdam and move back home to Huis ten Bosch Castle in 2022 just a few weeks after starting her Bachelor’s degree in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE), she is under special observation. The reason for this is the threats from the Dutch mafia, which have been troubling the palace for months. And Amalia also suffers from the tightened security precautions. “I went into college thinking that I would do what all students do. Unfortunately, the reality was anything but that. I’ll be completely honest: I still find it very difficult to deal with it. I miss normality Life of a student,” said the 19-year-old during a trip to the Caribbean with her parents at the beginning of the year.

One reason why Spanish media currently suspect that she is the heir to the throne moved secretly to Madrid. In the past few weeks and months, Amalia has been seen noticeably often in the Spanish capital, and Queen Máxima, 52, is also said to have visited her daughter in the metropolis at the beginning of November. If Amalia has really decided to take this step, perhaps a little more peace could finally return to her life.

Before it became known that the princess was being targeted by the mafia, the media was rumoring about an alleged boyfriend in 2022 – there was even talk of an engagement. However, the heir to the throne never confirmed the headlines. “I receive a tremendous amount of love from the people around me, but I know it’s not the answer you mean. I prefer to keep this to myself, but I promise you, if someone is serious, you will Be the first to know,” she cleverly answered questions from curious journalists.

Princess Leonor of Spain – the dutiful one

Amalia could occasionally enjoy royal company in Madrid from her colleague Princess Leonor, 18. But while the Dutchwoman is currently trying to enjoy her student life, Leonor has been completing traditional military training at the University since August of this year General Military Academy in Zaragoza, which is the Spanish counterpart to the British Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The heir to the Spanish throne will then attend the naval school and complete her training at the General Air Academy. Leonor previously completed the International Baccalaureate (Abitur) at UWC Atlantic College in the Welsh county of Vale of Glamorgan in May 2023.

“I have just finished high school and am now starting a new stage with military training. I am happy because I know how much the Spanish value our armed forces… It is an important moment in my life and I am very excited and determined to continue learning and doing my best,” said the Princess at the Princesa de Girona Foundation awards ceremony on July 5 in Girona, Catalonia. By deciding to join the military after school, the dutiful Leonor is following in her father’s footsteps King Felipe55.

Princess Elisabeth of Belgium – the determined one

Princess Elisabeth proves to be just as dutiful. In the In the summer of 2018, the heir to the Belgian throne moved to the for two years “United World College of the Atlantic” in Wales, here she completed her high school diploma. Elisabeth then went to the Royal Military School (KMS), where she completed training in military and social sciences. The Princess has been studying “History and Politics” since summer 2021 at Lincoln College, Oxford University.

However, Princess Elisabeth always returns to Belgium for important appearances on behalf of the crown; Elisabeth is well aware of her special position. The Belgian already practices royal restraint, never ends up in the headlines and, above all, knows how to protect her private life like a treasure.
