(Reuters) – The Moscow prosecutor’s office has demanded the classification as “extremist” of the work of rapper Oxxxymiron, one of the most popular musicians in Russia who has publicly opposed the invasion of Ukraine, report Russian news agencies.

According to Interfax, which quotes a spokesperson for the Moscow prosecutor’s office, an investigation has been opened into one of Oxxxymiron’s titles for “justification of acts of violence and the ideology of violence”.

According to Russian law, any content designated as “extremist” is prohibited.

Oxxxymiron, whose real name is Miron Fyodorov, has been one of the most prominent rappers in the country for the past ten years, with lyrics with a strong political content, often directed against the Kremlin.

Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, he canceled a planned tour of his country, saying, “I can’t entertain you when Russian missiles fall on Ukraine.”

He then left Russia, giving a series of concerts in Istanbul, London and Berlin, under the slogan “Russians Against War”, the proceeds of which were donated to Ukrainian refugees.
