(Reuters) – Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Russia wanted to expand the use of the ruble for energy exports, adding it was too early to discuss a timetable.

“The president has laid out a methodical and gradual approach to expanding the use of national currencies,” the spokesperson said during a press conference call.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the role of national currencies in export deals is set to increase, as Russia wants payments for its gas supplies, mainly to Europe, to be made in roubles.

Vladimir Putin also said this week that Russia was ready to find new outlets for its oil and gas, particularly to Asia and China.
