Sad list – series of airplane accidents in and around Vorarlberg

The terrible accident in Dornbirn is part of a long list of plane crashes in and around Vorarlberg. Lake Constance in particular has repeatedly been the scene of tragedies of this kind. With a few exceptions, these ended fatally for the passengers. An excerpt from previous years:

February 23, 1989: While approaching the Altenrhein airfield, a “Jetprop900” of the Rhine Valley flight crashes into Lake Constance. All eleven people on board died, including the then Austrian Minister of Social Affairs Alfred Dallinger and Brigitte Seewald, who was also a co-owner of the Vorarlberg airline. January 1994: A Cessna 425 crashed – again while approaching Altenrhein. Among the five dead were the two Germans Josef Rimmele and Klaus Eichler, who are said to have been involved in dubious arms deals. Incidentally, an accident report was never drawn up. 23. March 2012: A small plane crashes into Lake Constance near Bregenz Wocherhafen – the two occupants could only be rescued dead. 27. March 2012: A small airplane overturns on landing at Hohenems airfield. The pilot, a student pilot from Liechtenstein, got away with minor injuries. September 2016: In Leutkirch near the border, a fan gun crashes due to a defective engine – among the three victims was a young couple from Vorarlberg. 8. August 2017: A 74-year-old pilot and his 75-year-old partner crash on the flight from Zurich to Hamburg off the island of Mainau – both can only be recovered dead. February 2021: A twin-engine Piper crashes directly in front of the Swiss municipality of Staad and crashes into Lake Constance – miraculously, the pilot, a 70-year-old German, survived the accident almost unharmed. 5. April 2021: A small aircraft that took off in Hohenems is caught in a gust of wind while approaching in Ausserfern (T) and crashes. A student pilot from Vorarlberg (37) and his teacher are lucky – they both get away with minor injuries.
