Sale "at cost price": Astrazeneca plans Corona vaccine in 2020

Researchers around the world are looking for a possible vaccine against the novel corona virus. The pharmaceutical company Astrazeneca is right at the forefront and can imagine a market launch this year – for 2.50 euros per unit.

The pharmaceutical company Astrazeneca plans to launch a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year. This should be available worldwide "at cost price", as the company's head, Pascal Soriot, told the French radio station RTL. A unit should therefore be sold for 2.50 euros. "Our goal is to make the vaccine accessible to everyone," said Soriot.

The company hopes to produce a vaccine by the end of the year. "Maybe a little earlier if everything goes well," added Soriot.

Results from the third test phase in autumn

It was only on Monday that a study in the specialist magazine "The Lancet" had raised high hopes for the vaccine jointly developed by Astrazeneca and the British University of Oxford. In the first two series of tests, the substance proved to be well tolerated by the test subjects and caused the formation of antibodies and an immunization against the lung disease Covid-19.

The results of a third test phase are expected in autumn. If this is successful, the substance can then be mass-produced and administered.

Meanwhile, a Chinese vaccine manufacturer started the third phase of its drug testing in Brazil on Tuesday. According to a doctor in a hospital in Sao Paolo, the first volunteers received the vaccine, the effectiveness of which was demonstrated in the first two phases, as "Lancet" reported.
