According to a recent forecast by the research firm, six million electric vehicles (including battery and plug-in hybrid models) should be delivered this year. This represents an increase of two million units from the four million electric vehicles delivered in 2021.
In addition, Gartner estimates that due to the increase in the number of electric vehicles, the number of charging stations will reach a total of 2.1 million units this year, compared to 1.6 million in 2021.

“Electric vehicles are an important technology to help reduce CO2 emissions from the transportation sector,” Jonathan Davenport, research director at Gartner, said in a statement. “The current chip shortage will impact production in 2022, and although deliveries of vans and trucks are currently low, their deliveries will increase rapidly as professionals see the financial and environmental benefit of electrifying their fleets. »
However, Gartner also detailed the challenges facing the electric vehicle industry, including the need to reduce vehicle and battery prices, improve range and, perhaps most importantly, improve fuel efficiency. charging infrastructure.
“Furthermore, the lack of availability of fast charging for home and public charging is a major issue that needs to be addressed,” adds Jonathan Davenport. “Utility providers will need to increase their investments in connected grid infrastructure to cope with growing electricity consumption. »
This upward trend in electric vehicle sales worldwide will continue in the coming years, as Gartner also predicts that by 2030, electric vehicle deliveries will increase by 32%, to reach 36 million units.
