Salzburg – The strict controls on animal transport are working

418 bulls, cows and calves – loaded in 25 vans. Animal inspectors were out and about in Bergheim, checking trucks on their way to the slaughterhouse. There were hardly any complaints, the controls, which have now been running for 15 years, are apparently having an effect.

Inspector Helmut Naderer took stock of the situation with satisfaction: Animal inspectors spent five hours checking vans in Bergheim on their way to the slaughterhouse and calf market. The authorities scrutinized 25 trucks and two warnings had to be issued.

One of the vans had too low a ceiling so that a bull’s spine was touching the roof. Risk of chafing! A second van had disregarded the size restrictions for the cattle. Some of the animals had driven almost eight hours behind them.
