Samsung Display would increase the production of QD-Oled panels by 50% by 2024

At the end of 2022, Samsung Display pledged to increase its production capacity of QD-Oled displays by 30%, and announced the launch this year of its first 77-inch and 49-inch panels for televisions and computer monitors. , respectively. With further increases in production capacity in 2024, Samsung Display will be able to produce 45,000 substrates per month, each of which can be cut into smaller displays, representing a production capacity increase of 50%.

A report by analyst firm UBI Research, quoted by the Korean site HelloT, recalls that Samsung Display is now mass-producing 55, 65 and 77-inch QD-Oled screens for televisions, and 34 and 49 inches for monitors. . The company’s 2023 panels have also been improved, with a blue-emitting layer that should boost the brightness and energy efficiency of QD-Oled displays. However, UBI deemed it unlikely that there would be further improvements in this area in 2024.

Despite its efforts, Samsung Display is still far behind LG Display in terms of overall Oled production capacity. LG offers Oled panels with four sub-pixels (blue, green, red and white) – a technology also dubbed WOled for White Oled – in sizes ranging from 27 inches to 97 inches.

LCD, Oled, QD-Oled… always more brightness on TVs

According to UBI Research, increasing the production capacity of display manufacturing companies almost always results in the addition of new sizes. It’s unclear what new Samsung Display options might come up with, but it’s already been reported that the company is considering a 27-inch QD-Oled panel for monitors, 42- or 48-inch models for smaller TVs, as well as 82, 88, or even 97 inch tiles for very large models.

With its increased capacity, Samsung Display could try to convince new TV brands to consider launching QD-Oled TVs. Currently, only Samsung Electronics and Sony sell QD-Oled televisions, the famous S95B and A95K that we tested. Philips has also expressed interest in this technology and could make an announcement later this year.
