Samsung will increasingly rely on artificial intelligence for smartphones in the future. But how is AI used in the new Galaxy S series?

“A new era” of mobile artificial intelligence (AI) that is “full of possibilities” was promised Samsung has already invited you to the Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17th. Accordingly, the new smartphone models from the Galaxy S24 series initially took a back seat at the electronics company’s presentation. Everything was initially about AI-powered features.

Eureka, the new AI functions…

Samsung’s smartphone boss TM Roh described the presentation of “Galaxy AI” as a “Eureka moment”. In the future, the group would like to, among other things, overcome language barriers as easily as possible. For example, “Live Translate” should make it possible to translate telephone conversations directly – on the receiver and on the display of the new smartphones. Accordingly, there will also be a translator for interactions on the street as well as “Chat Assist” in text chats with other people. The AI translator will initially support 13 languages - including German, English and Spanish.

The AI should also help streamline and automatically summarize notes via “Note Assist”. “Transcript Assist,” meanwhile, helps transcribe and translate recorded conversations. The AI can distinguish between different voices and create summaries here too.

With a circle to the next restaurant visit

One of the highlights, a “new way to look for”, was developed by Samsung together with Google. The “Circle to Search” function will make it possible to make search queries at any time using simple gestures on Android smartphones – without having to switch between apps.

Users press the home button and then circle an object on the display, slide their finger over a line in a chat or swipe over an object shown. The search pops up and users find the location of a mentioned restaurant or items of clothing similar to those of an influencer in her Insta post. According to the search engine giant, the function presented for Android smartphones will initially only be available for the three new models in the Galaxy S24 series, the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro from Google – from January 31st also in Germany.

The “ProVisual Engine” of the S24 series includes AI-controlled tools that are intended to make it easier to take photos and videos at a high level. Thanks to “Galaxy AI,” smartphones provide suggestions for optimizing images. Users can remove reflections, move objects and people in photos using generative AI, or subsequently slow down videos using “Instant Slow-Mo”.

Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24

All of this is used in the new models Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24. The Ultra variant has a quad-telephoto camera system with 5x optical zoom and 50 megapixel sensor. According to Samsung, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor should offer sufficient performance. The flatter 6.8-inch display of the Ultra version shines with a brightness of up to 2,600 nits and is said to be particularly resistant to scratches thanks to “Corning Gorilla Armor”. The smartphone has a titanium frame and is already available for pre-order in the colors “Titanium Gray”, “Titanium Black”, “Titanium Violet” and “Titanium Yellow”.

The smaller siblings S24+ (6.7 inches) and S24 (6.2 inches) come in the colors “Onyx Black”, “Marble Gray”, “Cobalt Violet” and “Amber Yellow” and can also be pre-ordered. Depending on the storage size, the Galaxy S24 costs from 899 euros, the Galaxy S24+ from 1,149 euros and the Galaxy S24 Ultra from 1,449 euros. According to the current status of the Samsung website, the devices will be shipped from January 24th. The smartphones are also available there in additional blue, green and orange color variants.
