Expected for the end of last year, the Samsung Odyssey S34BG850SU – the first QD-Oled model from the Korean manufacturer – is finally on sale, almost a year after the release of the Dell Alienware AW3423DW. If the latter is still sold around 1300 €, the Samsung model is displayed at 1500 €. This screen is the first model from the South Korean manufacturer to feature a QD-Oled panel. As on the Alienware model, this 34-inch curved panel (1800R) displays a UWQHD definition of 3440 x 1440 pixels and supports a native refresh rate of 175 Hz with FreeSync compatibility, and by extension G-Sync, but without the certification .
The QD-Oled technology developed by Samsung uses blue organic diodes (Oled) to excite quantum dots, and thus obtain more saturated colors. It obviously retains all the properties of Oled, with infinite contrast thanks to pixel-by-pixel brightness management and, above all, a response time of only 0.1 ms, very interesting for video games.
Samsung also advertises 99.3% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and HDR10 support, but still doesn’t specify peak peak brightness. The Alienware monitor, which uses the same panel, does indeed reach a maximum peak brightness of 1000 cd/m², while being HDR Display 400 Deepblack certified like the Samsung model. We can therefore assume that it will be the same with the QD-Oled screen of the Korean manufacturer.
In terms of ergonomics, you have to settle for height and tilt adjustment. The connection consists of an HDMI 2.1 input, a Mini DisplayPort and a USB-C port whose power is not specified. The monitor also features two 5W speakers. It stands out from the competition with the integration of the Samsung Gaming Hub, which provides direct access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, Google Stadia, Nvidia GeForce Now and Utomik video game streaming services. from the monitor. To do this, it embeds wifi and Bluetooth in order to connect to the Internet and a gamepad. Samsung’s Tizen system also allows the monitor to be used as a television with access to the various video streaming apps (Netflix , Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Twitch, etc.). Everything can be controlled using the supplied remote control. This system is already embedded on the giant Samsung ARK monitor. This probably explains the price difference with the Alienware model, which is more basic in terms of features.
