In Lottstetten, Germany, near the Swiss border, an SBB regional train collided with a car on Saturday morning. The driver could only be recovered dead. According to the police, he could have died before the accident.
At around 9 a.m., a report was received that a passenger car was standing on the train tracks between Lottstetten (D) and Jestetten (D), the police headquarters in Freiburg D announced on Saturday. However, the rail traffic on the affected route could not be blocked in time due to the proximity of a train traveling in the direction of Schaffhausen.
A few seconds later there was a collision between the SBB regional train and the car. The car was severely damaged in the process, the handlebars could only be recovered dead.
Replacement buses were used
According to the current status of the investigation, it cannot be ruled out that the driver died before the collision, as the Freiburg Police Headquarters wrote.
Nobody was injured on the SBB train that had crashed, and the train did not derail either. The passengers were carried on by replacement buses on behalf of SBB.
The cause of the accident is still unclear. According to the Freiburg Police Headquarters, a medical cause for the car moving from the lane to the track area cannot be ruled out.
The railway systems were damaged in the accident, so the line between Rafz and Jetstetten was closed for several hours. After the repair work, the SBB announced at 7 p.m. that the malfunction had been rectified and that the trains would run again according to the schedule. (SDA)
