The Swiss national team will travel back from Hungary on Thursday without a European Championship ticket in their luggage. Instead, she takes a large portion of frustration home with her. On Wednesday evening against Israel they once again failed to live up to their role as favorites in this European Championship qualification.

As a reminder: If the national team had saved the victory in Felcsut over time, they would have been able to be happy about definitive qualification for the European Championship despite a manageable performance after the final whistle.

Two scenarios possible

But the Swiss have to be patient until at least Saturday. In St. Jakob Park, Murat Yakin’s team has their second chance to close the bag. Two scenarios come into question:

  • A victory: If the national team wins the home game in Basel, they will definitely have their ticket to the European Championship, regardless of what happens in the parallel game between Israel and Romania.
  • A draw: One point is enough for the Swiss if Romania wins or draws against Israel. Then the Swiss and Romanians can no longer be pushed out of the top two places or Israel can no longer achieve one.

If neither of these two scenarios occurs on Saturday, there will be a big showdown in the last qualifying game on Tuesday evening away against Romania. The Swiss would do well to avoid such a situation.

The game on Saturday evening against Kosovo is likely to be a hot dance. St. Jakob Park is sold out, many fans will support the guests.
