This year, the UN General Assembly will once again count the German Chancellor among its guests. From speeches to bilateral discussions, Scholz has a lot planned in New York. He will also be honored with a prize in the US metropolis – alongside Ukrainian President Zelensky.

Chancellor Scholz will be flying to New York again this year for the general debate at the United Nations. During his stay in the global metropolis from September 17th to 20th, the SPD politician will, in addition to a speech before the UN General Assembly, also take part in a meeting of the UN Security Council on the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and in a climate summit, according to a government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced. In addition, numerous bilateral discussions will also be held.

Government spokesman Hebestreit was not yet able to provide any information about the individual bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the visit. As things stand, a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden is not planned, but both politicians are expected to meet at a larger event.

Global Citizen Awards ceremony

Scholz also receives a prize in New York. The Atlantic Council awards him the Global Citizen Award (World Citizen Award). This year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and First Eastern Investment Group boss Victor Chu will also receive this award. It is considered likely that Zelenskyj will also travel to New York, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

The prize is awarded each year during the UN General Debate to individuals “who have contributed to driving positive change in their societies and who embody a commitment to international cooperation.” The prize will be awarded at a commercial gala dinner on September 20, for which the cheapest tickets cost $2,500 (2,336 euros). The Atlantic Council is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting transatlantic relations.

Scholz also traveled to New York last year for the UN general debate. It was the Chancellor’s first visit to the most populous city in the USA – and the first participation in a UN General Assembly by a German Chancellor in 15 years.
