Sean Connery: the James Bond icon is dead

Sean Connery is dead. His son announced that. The Scottish actor and former James Bond actor was 90 years old.

One of the greats has passed away. Scottish acting legend and James Bond icon Sean Connery has died at the age of 90. This is reported by the British BBC, citing Connery's son Jason (57). According to this, his famous father "fell asleep peacefully" in his adopted home in the Bahamas after he "did not feel well for a while". He called it "a sad day for everyone who knew and loved my father, and a sad loss for everyone around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift of his acting."

An award-winning career

The Scot has been in front of the camera for several decades, his first appearances in the 1950s. He gained worldwide fame in the early 1960s when he was cast as the first James Bond to film the novels by Ian Fleming (1908-1964). He was a double-zero agent a total of seven times, from "James Bond chasing Dr. No" (1962) to "Diamond Fever" (1971).

For numerous fans he is still the only true 007 today. For himself, the role was both a blessing and a curse. Connery once told the Guardian: "I've always hated that damn James Bond. I'd love to kill him."

His other film highlights include "Der Name der Rose" (1986), "The Untouchables – Die Unbrechlichen" (1987), "Hunt for Red October" (1990) and his appearances in the "Indiana Jones" series as the father of the title character, who embodied Harrison Ford (78). The last movie with Sean Connery was released in 2003, "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". He had been retired from acting for several years.

In addition to an Oscar for his performance in "The Untouchables – Die Unbrechlichen" Connery won two BAFTAs and the Golden Globe Award. In 1996 he received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his life's work at the Globes. Sean Connery celebrated his 90th birthday at the end of August this year. Since 1975 he was married to Micheline Roquebrune (born 1929) for the second time. From his first marriage to Diane Cilento (1932-2011) comes son Jason.
