In the elections in November, the city of Berne SP is reaching for the city council with local councilor Marieke Kruit.
The decision was made with 98 votes in favor, 7 against and one abstention, as the two co-presidents of the party announced to the media.
The debate and decision-making were not public.
With their vote, the members followed a request from the party leadership. “It is urgently necessary that we offer voters a choice at the city council,” says SP co-president Meret Schindler to SRF. Local councilor Marieke Kruit is available. SP National Councilor Matthias Aebischer, who was also nominated for the local council elections on Monday, supported Kruit’s candidacy for the city council, it was said.
If Kruit is nominated by the SP delegates on May 13th, she will run against incumbent Alec von Graffenried from the Green Free List in the fall. Both belong to the ruling red-green-centre alliance. The alliance will be strengthened by several candidacies for the city council, according to the party leadership’s proposal. The electorate should have a choice at the city council.
