Women secure the championship for FC Bayern early

The women of FC Bayern secure the championship early. Coach Alexander Straus’ team made everything clear with a 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen. The second title of the season could come as early as Thursday in the final of the DFB Cup.

First title ticked off – the Bayern Munich footballers have won the German championship for the sixth time undefeated. Two game days before the end of the season, the Munich team secured the trophy for the second time in a row with a 2-1 (2-0) win at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. The rivals from VfL Wolfsburg are an uncatchable seven points behind.

In the first half, England international Georgia Stanway opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Linda Dallmann increased just a short time later (27th). Leverkusen’s Nikola Karczewska shortened the score in the second half (62′), but the Munich team still celebrated their second successful title defense after 2016.

The second championship is something very special for coach Alexander Straus. This success means everything to him “personally and professionally,” he said before the game. Thanks to the triumph, his team also qualified for the group stage of the Champions League in the coming season. On Thursday (4 p.m./ZDF, Sky and in the ntv.de live ticker) FC Bayern can achieve the double in the DFB Cup final against record winners Wolfsburg.

Future national coach is there

Under the eyes of Bayern President Herbert Hainer and the upcoming women’s national coach Christian Wück – he will succeed Horst Hrubesch after the Olympic Games in the summer – Bayern immediately put pressure on. They tried to overcome Leverkusen’s deep position with long balls. Ultimately, however, an individual action initiated the leadership. Jovana Damnjanovic did a great job in the penalty area and found Stanway in the middle, who only pushed in to take the deserved lead (18′). The busy national player Giulia Gwinn caused the next dangerous scene. Dallmann was denied by Bayer keeper Friederike Repohl after her pass (22′), but shortly afterwards she increased the score from a corner (27′).

Until the break, with loud support from the Bayern fans, the Munich team remained highly concentrated – a third goal was in the air. Leverkusen tried hard, but couldn’t counter FCB’s dominance. The away fans were already singing about the championship.

In the second half, the sun broke through the gray cloud cover over the Ulrich Haberland Stadium, and the 2,817 spectators saw a similar picture as before. The FCB played forward again. Gwinn missed the 3-0 (49th) shortly after referee Anna-Lena Heidenreich’s restart. The ball ran well in the Munich team. But then Bayer came close again. After a confusing situation in the penalty area, substitute Karczewska made it possible (62′). Bayern immediately switched gears again and tried to keep things calm with a lot of possession. Then there was a celebration.
