Get the most out of your annual vacation: If you cleverly combine public holidays and long weekends in the coming year, you can get up to 47 vacation days. We show how this works and which travel destinations are available.
The annual vacation is planned for 2022 and most workers quickly run out of vacation days. A closer look at the calendar for the nationwide holidays and bridging days shows, however, that there are many ways to generously extend the days off. We’ll show you how.
1. Easter: Good Friday and Easter Monday make 16 free days possible
In most federal states, the Easter holidays begin on Saturday, April 9, 2022. Those who only take the first week off have a total of ten days off thanks to Good Friday and Easter Monday – for four approved vacation days.
If you want to have longer days off, you can also apply for leave for the week after Easter – and then have eight days off for 16 days (from April 9th to 18th).
At this time of the year it is up to 20 degrees and around eight hours of sunshine per day on Mallorca. To the springtime Temperatures lush green vegetation joins them. Bathing in the sea with water temperatures of around 15 degrees is only something for die-hard people, but the island, which is rarely visited at this time, entices with its very own magic.

The region around Florence and Siena has a lot to offer for athletes and culture fans: triathletes like to prepare for the summer season here. Those interested in culture will find some of Italy’s most famous sights – from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence to the Piazza del Campo in Siena to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
2nd bridging day after Ascension Day: 1 vacation day for 4 days off
The long weekend around Ascension Day is ideal for a short trip to a European metropolis. By submitting just one day of vacation, Friday, May 27th, you get four free days (Thursday, May 26th to Sunday, May 29th). Krakow is an insider tip among city trips.
The student city with its medieval architecture, many hip bars, eye-catching graffiti and an alternative subculture is located in southern Poland and is significantly cheaper than other large cities. Our tip: Be sure to try beetroot soup or matzo dumplings!
3. Pentecost: So 4 vacation days become 9 free days
Nine days of free time for the use of four days of vacation: This calculation works out in the week of Pentecost from Saturday 4th to Sunday 12th June 2022 – thanks to the holiday of Whit Monday.
For romantics, for example, a trip to Santorini is recommended over this extended week. The Cyclades island with its 300 meter high crater walls, black lava beaches, whitewashed houses and churches with blue domes is considered the Greek island of longing par excellence.
The setting sun makes Oia, the city on the edge of the crater, shine in pastel colors before sinking into the infinitely blue sea. With already summer temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees, it is usually much warmer on Santorini at Pentecost than in local regions.
4th Day of German Unity: Holidays at the beginning of October
Take four vacation days and enjoy nine days off: Monday, October 3rd, Day of German Unity, makes this wonderful start of the month possible – vacation from Saturday, October 1st to Sunday, October 9th, 2022. If you want to extend the summer, you can to do in the Canary Islands – without the tourist crowds. In four to five hours of flight time, for example, La Gomera or Fuerteventura can be reached.
The two Spanish islands in the Atlantic are very different in terms of size and landscape. Windsurfers, kiters and surfers will find some of the world’s best areas on Fuerteventura. A varied network of trails awaits hikers on La Gomera. And cyclists can improve their mileage on both islands on demanding routes.
5. Christmas 2022: More favorable holidays than this year
Even if Christmas Eve in 2022 is a Saturday and the first Christmas day is a Sunday, at least the second Christmas day falls on a working day. If you take the last week of December off, you only have to plan four days of vacation – and have nine days off, from December 24, 2022 to Sunday, January 1, 2023.
