SEGA curbs its enthusiasm for NFTs in the face of negative public reactions


We understand, the NFT will be at the heart of all discussions in 2022, often to the chagrin of players, who have largely expressed their lack of interest in the practice, as the failure of Ubisoft Quartz proves. Despite this, several publishers do not shrink from their enthusiasm for NFTs (after all, it excites shareholders), like Square Enix or Konami, but SEGA, who had however expressed his interest in technology, and curbing his desires.

In an interview with Tweak Town, spotted by VGC, Haruki Satomi, the CEO of SEGA, looks back on the publisher’s plans for NFTs, who wanted to try some experiences with this technology. Although he does not say that NFTs will no longer be part of SEGA’s plans (this is far from the case), he expresses some reservations following the reactions of the public:

There have already been many announcements about it, including abroad, but there are users who perceive it in a negative light. We need to carefully assess many things such as how we can mitigate the negative elements, to what extent we can bring this into Japanese regulations, what will be accepted and what will not by users. Then we’ll take a closer look. […] but if this is seen as just a lucrative business, I would like to make the decision not to continue.

Well, we understand here that it is more a concern for the image that preoccupies Haruki Satomi than anything else, but seeing a great publisher being cautious on this subject has become rare these days.

Remember that NFTs make it possible to acquire “digital objects”, such as skins in the case of video games, in order to be able to then resell them. A practice that has been widely criticized for its speculative side and its high carbon footprint, linked to technology blockchain.
