DAKAR (Reuters) – Former Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade and his movement, the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), on Friday lent their support to opposition presidential candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The Senegalese are called to the polls on Sunday to nominate a successor to Macky Sall.

The candidacy of Karim Wade, the son of Abdoulaye Wade, under the PDS banner was invalidated on the grounds that he enjoyed dual Franco-Senegalese nationality – a French nationality which he has since renounced.

“We are at a pivotal moment in our history, where today’s votes will define the landscape of our common future. Given the current situation, the PDS has an imperative duty to take a position,” we can read in a PDS press release signed by its general secretary, former president Wade.

“In this spirit of responsibility towards our homeland, (…) our political party has chosen to give its full support to the Diomaye Faye Coalition for the presidential election next Sunday,” it is specified.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a 43-year-old former tax inspector, is the favorite against the ruling coalition candidate, Amadou Ba. In total, 19 candidates are in the running.
