Novak Djokovic says he will remember his deportation from Australia at the beginning of the year for the rest of his life. However, the Serb emphasized that he wanted to “look ahead”.

“Of course, what happened 12 months ago wasn’t easy for me,” said Djokovic in Adelaide, where he will compete in the ATP 250 tournament (from January 1st). “Of course it’s disappointing to leave the country like this.” Djokovic was expelled in January shortly before the start of the Australian Open because of his missing corona vaccination. A three-year entry ban was later lifted.

“You can’t forget these events,” emphasized the 35-year-old. “These things accompany you for the rest of your life. I’ve never experienced anything like it and hopefully never will again. But it’s a valuable life experience for me and something that will stay with me. But I have to keep going.”

On the site of great success

Djokovic was pleased about his return – this time unhindered. “It’s great to be back in Australia. It’s a country where I’ve had tremendous success in my career, especially in Melbourne,” said the nine-time Australian Open winner.
