Seriously injured – mountaineer fell a hundred meters over a glacier

A serious alpine accident happened on Wednesday morning in the high mountains in the Tyrolean Sellraintal. A 34-year-old was traveling with comrades on the Rotgratferner in the municipality of St. Sigmund. A slip had fatal consequences for the mountaineer.

The 34-year-old was on the mountain tour with two companions. She should have been well equipped, as the police describe. Despite crampons, the woman slipped around 10:30 a.m. on the heavily soaked Rotgratferner and fell. Companions saw the fall and sounded the alarm. Attempts to hold on to the ice with the guide pick failed. The alpinist fell about a hundred meters over the glacier and was badly injured at the end of the run. The companions had to watch the crash. They sounded the alarm. Rescue workers salvaged the crashed person from the emergency helicopter and took her to the hospital. According to initial information, the woman suffered, among other things, a fracture to an ankle and abrasions all over her body.
