E-scooter drivers often have accidents while drunk

Noticeably often on weekends and under the influence of alcohol: This is how many e-scooter drivers have accidents. A report by the federal government reveals that there are also many problems with wrong-way drivers. On the other hand, there are seldom seriously injured people.

According to a report by “Spiegel”, an evaluation prepared for the federal government shows many problems with e-scooters. Accordingly, users of the scooters with electric motors are often out and about where it is not allowed, for example on sidewalks, reported the magazine. In addition, people had a noticeably frequent accident on weekends and under the influence of alcohol.

The “Spiegel” relied on an interim report by the Federal Highway Research Institute. This has been ready for several weeks and is in the Federal Ministry of Transport. The question is what consequences e-scooters have on road safety.

In more than 80 percent of the cases in which an e-scooter collides with another road user, the scooter driver is injured, according to the report, according to the investigation. Cyclists and pedestrians are involved in a third of accidents with personal injury, of which “a quarter are children and seniors”.

The proportion of e-scooter accidents with personal injuries is negligibly small at 0.6 percent compared to the total number of accidents in Germany. But that is mainly due to the comparatively small number of vehicles. Numerous cities such as Berlin, Hamburg or Düsseldorf have planned stricter rules.

According to “Spiegel”, the period from January to June 2020 is highlighted in the interim report. The majority of the 654 accidents recorded ended with minor injuries. But there were also two deaths.
