She-Hulk on Disney+: her first appearance, an abandoned film project… 3 things to know about the XXL heroine

New heroine from the Marvel stable on Disney+, the “She-Hulk” series features lawyer Jennifer Walters as an angry green vigilante. Back to three pieces of information that you (perhaps) don’t know.

Played by Tatiana Maslany, She-Hulk is entering the MCU. The series dedicated to the superheroine takes the form of a procedural program with enough humor and action. On the screen, we find in particular Jameela Jamil, Benedict Wong or even Tim Roth, already present in The Incredible Hulk in the guise of the Abomination.

Much less famous than his cousin Bruce Banner, Miss Hulk still knows a well-filled history before the project of this series. Back to three things to know about the lawyer with Herculean strength.

First appearance in 1980

Nearly eighteen years after the creation of Hulk, the female version landed on comic book shelves in February 1980 with a first issue entitled The Savage She-Hulk #1. It is made under the impetus of Stan Lee and John Buscema, one of Marvel’s most famous designers.

If a blood transfusion is at the origin of the transformation of Jennifer Walters, the origin of the heroine is somewhat different from the series. In the comics, no car accident. A henchman of criminal Nick Trask fires a shot at the lawyer while she is in the company of Bruce Banner.

After a blood transfusion, she is taken to a hospital, but Nick Trask’s minions track her down to finish the job. As they attempt to choke her, Jennifer Walters wakes up and lets out her alter-ego, She-Hulk.

She-Hulk created for a matter of rights

Behind the creation of the character, there is a very specific reason. In the 1970s, the series The Man Who Was Worth Three Billion was a hit. It brings together millions of viewers and spans five seasons. The success is such that a female spin-off is born, The Bionic Woman or Super Jaimie in French version.

Launched in 1976, this new version will have less than three seasons. This recipe inspires the screenwriters of the program The Incredible Hulk with Lou Ferrigno. They, in turn, want to create a female version of the green hero.

The rumor is making its way to the ears of Marvel executives. If a female Hulk sees the light of day on the small screen, it will be impossible to obtain the rights to launch their own version. It was at this time that Stan Lee made the decision to write the first issue.

An abandoned film project

In 1991, the production company New World Pictures – behind many horror films like hellraiser, House and Halloween 4 – decides to make a solo film about the heroine. To embody Jennifer Walters, it is the star of the 80s Brigitte Nielsen who is chosen. A director, Larry Cohen, is also hired.

Promotional photos – which recently resurfaced online – show the actress as she hulk in an aesthetic very inspired by the 80s. Unfortunately, the project will never go through the filming stage for reasons still unknown.

It will be necessary to wait more than 30 years to see landing she hulk on the screens. The series is currently available on Disney+.
