Shrek: pause at 21 minutes and 30 seconds, this wink is one of the best hidden in cinema

A look back at the first adventure of the green ogre produced by Dreamworks studios in 2001, and at a hidden character that no one had noticed!

A funny nod to The Matrix, a horrible detail on the three Goldilocks bears, a blue banner displaying an “F” which brings back some memories or even an abominable treachery on the part of Peter Pan… The first part of the Shrek saga, which is one of the most famous animated franchises from Dreamworks studios, is full of little easter eggs to spot.

One of these details, however, is much more difficult to find than the others. If you don’t know exactly where it is hiding, it will even be practically impossible to find it. To have a chance to get your hands on it, follow our instructions carefully!

You will first need to press the “pause” button on your remote control at 21 minutes and 30 seconds into the film, in the scene where Shrek and Donkey arrive at Lord Farquaad’s castle. When the palace mascot hits his head against the ramparts, pay close attention to the gatehouse on the left and the window there.

If possible, zoom in on that specific part of the image, increase the brightness of your screen, squint a little and take a good look. In the reflection of the window, you will see that we find… Z, the insectoid protagonist of Antz (see below).

Dreamworks Animation

This film, made in 1998 (three years before Shrek) was the very first feature film from Dreamworks Animation. No wonder, therefore, that the studio artists were keen to pay him a discreet little tribute in their new production.

Even if they don’t wander from one film to another as often as the heroes of Disney or Pixar, it happens that the characters of Dreamworks feature films make a small cameo in another production of the studio. The hippopotamus Gloria from Madagascar, for example, made a rather sordid appearance in Dragons.
