Since 2002 – Poster ban “for reasons of traffic safety”

There has been a poster ban in the city of Mattersburg and in the district of Walbersdorf since 2002. With one exception in 2017, all parties have complied with it.

During election campaigns, some streets are completely paved with the likenesses of the candidates. Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) wants to counteract this with a poster ban. This has been practiced in Mattersburg since 2002. To protect the townscape, the SPÖ, ÖVP, FPÖ and Greens once agreed on this in the municipal council. Since then, no posters may be put up in the local area of Mattersburg and Walbersdorf, but only outside. The argument is the protection of the local image. “It actually works very well,” reports Mayor Claudia Schlager (SPÖ). There was only excitement in the 2017 National Council election, when a small party ignored it and the posters were removed. Regarding the ongoing debate, Schlager says that she understands the concerns of the opposition, but that the population will welcome the implementation.
