British Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton was knighted by Prince Charles at Windsor Castle.

British Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton (36) has been knighted by Prince Charles (73). The official act that makes the professional sportsman a sir took place on Wednesday morning at Windsor Castle.

Buckingham Palace announced in December 2020 that the Briton would be knighted. At that time, Hamilton had just won his seventh world title and was level with record world champion Michael Schumacher (52). However, the solemn ceremony had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic.

Since 2009, Hamilton has also been a member of the “Order of the British Empire” (MBE); after his first world title he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II (95).

Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, as the newly honored driver is now fully called, is the fourth Formula 1 driver to receive this royal award. Before him, Sir Jackie Stewart (82) was raised in 2001, Sir Stirling Moss (1929-2020) in 2000 and Sir Jack Brabham (1926-2014) in 1979.

After the drama at the Abu Dhabi race

The motorsport icon, who was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, was denied the eighth world title at the race in Abu Dhabi on Sunday when the Belgian Max Verstappen (24) won his first championship under controversial circumstances.
