Romy Schneider faces competition in December. A new series about the legendary Empress of Austria starts on RTL +.

Christmas without the “Sissi” films with Romy Schneider (1938-1982) on television? Unimaginable for many. This year, however, the classic is getting competition: On December 12th, RTL + will launch the new series “Sisi” about the legendary Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

Unlike the films with Romy Schneider, the six-part series not only spells the Empress’s nickname correctly, with just one “s”. She also wants to reinterpret the regent’s life.

Sisi as “Lady Di of the 19th century”

RTL + describes Sisi as “Europe’s first superstar, Lady Di of the 19th century”. The series is designed as a coming-of-age story. The Bavarian Duchess Elisabeth falls in love as a “carefree teenager” with the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, who is “powerful, attractive and desirable, but also has a dark and dangerous side”. Sisi grows with her experience and becomes a modern monarch.

“Sisi” series: the actors

Dominique Devenport (born 1996) plays the title role in the event series. The daughter of an American and a Swiss woman has just graduated from the renowned Otto Falckenberg drama school in Munich.

Franz embodies the already experienced Jannik Schümann (29, “9 days awake”). Désirée Nosbusch (56) plays Sisi’s mother-in-law. Julia Stemberger (56) can be seen as Sisi’s mother.

By the way, “Sisi” is getting competition from another series. Netflix is currently shooting “The Empress” about the Empress in Germany.
