  • In front of more than 12,000 people, Marco Odermatt wins the giant slalom in Adelboden.

  • Not everyone can understand that so many people are on site despite the corona pandemic.

  • Manuel Feller commented in an interview.

Marco Odermatt won the giant slalom in Adelboden with his gala appearance in front of more than 12,000 spectators. While numerous other countries forego spectators at competitions, people from all parts of Switzerland came together again in Adelboden. For security, the event will be carried out according to 3G measures. The 2G + rule applies in the tents.

There is no mask requirement in the finish area. The organizers say: “Ski fans wear a mask out of solidarity.” On site, however, you only see a few fans with masks. The ORF expert and former slalom driver Thomas Sykora even said that he was afraid in the meantime. The ORF continues to say during the broadcast: «We hope that goes well».

Award ceremony canceled

Manuel Feller, who was able to convince with second place in Adelboden, said a bit jokingly after the competition in the ORF interview: “The Swiss are going a bit differently. They try to infect everyone on one weekend ». At the press conference that followed, he said again: “I know the situation is not easy on the whole planet. Our job is to ski. Such decisions have to be made by others. ” He simply enjoyed the fans as he crossed the finish line.

In the evening the award ceremony should actually take place in the World Cup village. Nothing will come of it now. As the organizer announced, the event fell through. This “for safety reasons, logistical aspects and for the best benefit of the athletes.” Actually, with the cancellation, the whole program was canceled. A DJ appeared on three songs and said goodbye at 6.15 p.m., although the party should have lasted until 8 p.m. On Sunday, however, it will continue again. This time a slalom is on the program, also with the 3G rule. This regulation will also apply in Wengen for the Lauberhorn competitions next week.

Athletes also tense

The ski associations deal with the corona pandemic differently. Swiss Ski takes the current corona situation very seriously. Media appointments are mostly held virtually. All drivers currently have a single room. No wonder: the risk of being infected with the corona virus before the Olympics increases with the current infection rate. The individual drivers even go one step further. Justin Murisier, for example, only celebrated New Year’s Eve with his girlfriend. Ramon Zenhäusern, together with his sponsor, bought a device that cleans the air in hotel rooms.

When asked by 20 Minuten this week, Adelboden winner Marco Odermatt said: “I’ve been very relaxed lately. But for a week or two, when you see how there have been cases and you know how the drivers have been paying attention, the tension has increased. I wouldn’t call it fear. But there is certainly respect for the next few weeks. ” Luca Aerni has to survive January. “Reach wood and hope,” says the slalom driver.
