Geiger celebrates third World Cup win of the season

Ski jumper Karl Geiger wins the home World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt ahead of Slovenian Anze Lanisek and Markus Eisenbichler and conquers the yellow jersey of the leader in the overall World Cup. The two top German jumpers are in great form almost two weeks before the Olympic Winter Games.

Ski jumper Karl Geiger celebrated his third win of the season at the World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt. The 28-year-old from Oberstdorf prevailed in the Black Forest ahead of the Slovenian Anze Lanisek and his teammate Markus Eisenbichler (Siegsdorf). On top of that, Geiger regained the lead in the overall World Cup from the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi, who finished fifth.

Geiger jumped 132.0 and 141.0 meters (288.3 points) in the Black Forest and was well ahead of Lanisek (283.1), who was still in the lead after the first round. With his twelfth career success, Geiger drew level with the former tour winner Dieter Thoma.

Eisenbichler (273.9) flew from fifth place in the final to the podium. Almost two weeks before the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the two best German jumpers were in impressive form. Stephan Leyhe (Willingen) also impressed with eighth place. Geiger, Eisenbichler and Leyhe had already been nominated for the Olympics.

Wellinger is missing because of Corona

In the fight for the last two Beijing tickets, in the absence of two-time Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger, who had tested positive for Corona on Friday, Constantin Schmid (Oberaudorf) probably booked his Beijing trip in ninth place. Team world champion Severin Freund (Rastbüchl) missed the last chance to meet the norm in 17th place, for which the 33-year-old would have had to be at least 15th.

Pius Paschke (Kiefersfelden) missed the second round in 33rd place and therefore has bad cards. National coach Stefan Horngacher distributed the last starting places on Saturday evening among Schmid, Freund, Paschke and Wellinger.

The jumpers from the German “B-Team” of the national group showed themselves to be strong. Justin Lisso (Schmiedefeld) scored the first points in his first second World Cup appearance as a great eleventh. Three-time world champion Richard Freitag (Aue), who made his first World Cup appearance since January 1, 2021, took 21st place. Philipp Raimund (Oberstdorf/27th) also secured World Cup points for the first time.
