“Slahi and His Torturers” is up for an International Emmy. The NDR report was nominated in the Current Affairs category.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has nominated for the International Emmy 2022 announced in the News and Current Affairs categories. And a German film can also hope for a prize that will be awarded on September 28 in New York City: The report “Slahi and his torturers” from the NDR magazine “Panorama” was nominated in the Current Affairs category.

The investigative documentary film by the American John Goetz (60) and his British colleague Ben Hopkins (53) deals with the case of the former Guantanamo prisoner Mohamedou Ould Slahi (51, “The Guantanamo Diary Uncensored”). Slahi was held in the famous US detention center from 2002 to 2016 and was viewed by the authorities as a key figure in the terrorist organization al-Qaeda. According to his own statements, he was tortured there for months. Later, both a court and an investigative commission acquitted him of all allegations.

“Slahi and his torturers” premiered on the first TV

“Slahi and his torturers” is an 87-minute film produced by NDR with the participation of Arte, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. A short version was initially broadcast on Arte on September 7, 2021. The long version celebrated its TV premiere on September 14, 2021 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The makers recently received the “Stern” award for the best investigation for their work.

The competition for the 2022 International Emmy Current Affairs comes from Nigeria (“Black Axe”), Brazil (“Domingo Espetacular: Parkinson’s Research”) and Great Britain (“Exposure – Fearless: The Women Fighting Putin”). In the News category, productions from Qatar, France and again Great Britain and Brazil are competing. US entries will not be considered in the international category.
