Maritime polar air will reach Germany in the coming days. On the back, Tief Annette pushes the cold air over to us and brings frost, black ice and snow back to Germany.
Mainly responsible for the extreme weather changes these days is the large low pressure complex Ümit, which initially located near Great Britain brought the humid subtropical warm air from the Canary Islands to us.
On Wednesday the precipitation intensified in the southeast and in the extreme south. Here, 15 to 40 liters of rain per square meter fall in 48 hours. In the Bavarian Forest and Thuringian Forest up to 60 liters. In the northern Black Forest, the amount of rain even adds up to 100 liters in three days, most of it in just 48 hours.
Flood in the southern half
Although these amounts of rain cannot be compared with those of the flood disaster last summer, when 100 to 150 liters fell in 24 hours over large areas in the west, they are sufficient for many streams and smaller rivers to reach high water marks.
This has already happened on the Itz in Schenkenau in Lower Franconia. It is already causing major floods of reporting level 3. This mark has also been reached in the upper reaches of Nahe, Blies and Theel in Saarland. There the levels are already falling again. In the larger rivers, however, the increases occur later. In northern Baden-Württemberg, water levels of a biannual flood are occasionally reached.
Snow line is falling rapidly
When the cold fronts of Annette and Ümit hit the Alps on Wednesday, the snow line there drops rapidly from 2000 to around 500 meters. Heavy snowfalls and amounts of new snow of 10 to 30 centimeters are then possible.
In Carinthia and the Julian Alps on the Slovenian side, 50 to 80 centimeters could come together locally by Thursday. On the peaks of the low mountain ranges, on the other hand, it is probably only enough for a few centimeters.
Frost and slipperiness in the lowlands
In Germany, on the other hand, frost and slipperiness are returning, initially in the low mountain ranges and on the edge of the Alps on Wednesday. In the night of Thursday, the temperatures drop to values around 0 degrees in large parts of the flatlands. In parts of northern Germany in particular, there is then the risk of freezing moisture.
