MADRID, Dec 29 (Reuters) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Friday appointed Carlos Cuerpo, until now Secretary General of the Treasury, as Minister of Economy and Trade.

Pedro Sanchez ended weeks of speculation by announcing the name of Nadia Calviño’s replacement, who is to take the helm of the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Carlos Cuerpo, 43, is expected to take the oath of office before King Felipe sometime Friday.

As part of this reshuffle, Pedro Sanchez also promoted Budget Minister Maria Jesus Montero to the post of Deputy Prime Minister, held until now by Nadia Calviño.

Maria Jesus Montero, number two in the Socialist Party, is one of Pedro Sanchez’s most loyal supporters.

Carlos Cuerpo, Spain’s top civil servant since 2008, played a key role in discussions on the European Union’s new tax rules package as a negotiator for Spain’s rotating presidency. (Reporting David Latona and Belén Carreño; French version Nathan Vifflin, editing by Kate Entringer)
