Eminem has sworn off drugs and alcohol for 16 years now. The superstar announced this on Instagram.

Hip-hop superstar Eminem (51) shared a special milestone with his fans. The 15-time Grammy Award winner posted a photo on Instagram in which he was holding an Alcoholics Anonymous chip in his hand. He received the coin for abstaining from drugs and alcohol for an impressive 16 years.

Eminem narrowly missed death

The star has been sober since April 20, 2008, after narrowly surviving an overdose a year earlier. Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, had spoken about his previous addiction to sleeping pills and Vicodin in interviews years ago. That’s how he revealed it “New York Times” in 2010. “Vicodin, Valium, Ambien and towards the end methadone, which caused my overdose. I didn’t know it was methadone. I grabbed pills wherever I could. I just took whatever I could people gave me,” said the now 51-year-old at the time.

Eminem published his new Instagram post without any accompanying text. However, the congratulations are piling up in the comments column. “Biggest influence and mentor,” wrote Nathan Kane Mathers (38), the star’s brother. Eminem’s long-time manager Paul Rosenberg (52) also spoke up. He wrote: “Sweet 16. I’m so proud of you.”

In “Paul Pod”, the podcast of his manager Rosenberg, the rapper looked back on the time surrounding the recording of his album “Relapse” in 2022. It was the star’s first after turning away from drugs and alcohol. “I remember when I was sober for the first time and all the crap was out of my system, I was just happy and everything was new to me again. It was the first album and the first time in a long time, that I had fun recording it,” Eminem said at the time.
